Since finishing his residency in 1995, Dr. Southerland has remained involved with teaching at all levels of the profession. He is a faculty member of the Podiatry Institute, AO North America, and The American Association of Foot and Ankle Osteosynthesis. He has lectured both nationally and internationally. In 2012 (above), He was the Keynote speaker at the ACPS Seminar in Sydney. He was named an Honorary Fellow at that time.
In 2014, Dr. Southerland was invited back to Australia to teach a surgery course to the residents at the University of Western Australia. This was his second time teaching at UWA and his eleventh trip down under.
In August of 2017, Dr. Southerland went to Spain to help teach a cadaveric surgery course in Vigo. This was his second trip there to help in the advancement of podiatric education in Spain. He continues to work on his Spanish by taking weekly classes.
Ever since his first medical mission with "Healing the Children" to Guatemala in 1999, Dr. Southerland has had a keen interest in treating kids. He treats everything thing from warts and ingrowns to complex reconstructive surgery.

The newest frontier in Ankle Surgery is ankle replacement. Dr. Southerland has been trained and has used various implants over the years.
One of the most common foot problems is plantar fasciitis, or heel spur syndrome. This usually responds to conservative care, but Dr. Southerland offers advanced options if it does not. These include shockwave therapy, Stem cell injections, as well as surgery.
Many people have bunions but all are not painful. They only need to corrected surgically when the pain interferes with ones work, shoes, or activities. There are many procedures for correcting bunions. Come in and see which one is right for you.
Flat feet are generally a hereditary foot structure. There are a lot of people running around with flat feet, and they don't have any problems. But many do, even at a young age. Flat feet can be surgically repaired but that is only necessary in painful cases and extreme deformities.

Dr. Southerland served as the chief editor of the 4th Edition of McGlamry's Comprehensive Textbook of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He also wrote chapters in the previous editions.
In addition to being a faculty member, Dr. Southerland also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. The Podiatry Institute is a nonprofit educational foundation based in Atlanta, GA where he did his residency training. He lectures regularly at their seminars around the country.
Dr. Southerland is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is both board certified in Foot Surgery as well as Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery.
Dr. Southerland makes his home in Mansfield with his wife Kimberly and their two children, Jake and Kylie. They both attend Mansfield High and Jake is off to Oklahoma State in the fall of 2019. Kylie is a cheerleader and Jake played golf for MHS.
Dr. Southerland likes to unwind by playing golf with both his son Jake and his friends. It took a while, but Jake can now beat him.
In addition to golf, Dr. Southerland is an avid cyclist, both road and mountain. He tried his hand at triathlons in the past, but decided he prefers the bike over running and swimming.
